Andrew, welcome to Stunning Men and a big thank you for taking the time to do the interview. You are from Perth, Australia and still live there …
(Andrew laughs) Yeah I still live in Perth.
That wasn’t a criticism by the way.
Well, I grew up here, have gone through school, and even graduated from university now with a Bachelor of Commerce. It’s my home, but now that I’m growing up I feel like it’s time to do something that’ll give me a bit more of a worldly perspective. I’m the oldest boy in a large family, and so feel like I should be setting an example for the rest of my siblings by challenging myself with new and exciting endeavours.
First thing first ... how did you get into modelling?
I’m not really sure to be honest. I guess I always had an interest in stage performance, acting and music. From there I started meeting all kinds of interesting people around Perth, and ended up doing a few minor shoots for friends. My first real crack at modelling came from when my girlfriend asked me to go in a modelling competition with her where I came runner up in the male category, and yeah, that’s how the ball started rolling.
What do you think is the most fulfilling thing about modelling?
I just love how I’m able to be and create any kind of man while I’m doing a photo shoot. I’ve always had a pretty vivid imagination, and love watching action, hero, dramas and even romantic movies, and so being able to create all these looks and characters in a shoot, even if it’s only a still image, really makes it a lot of fun and incredibly fulfilling.

How comfortable are you in showing off your physique in a shoot?
I’m actually pretty comfortable showing off my body in shoots. I was always brought up to never really be ashamed of the human form, and I can appreciate the art and nature of the photography in shoots. I mean, I’m not a big, muscle-bound guy, so yeah I can get nervous when showing off my body. The most important thing I remember is that if I’m proud and confident in what I’m doing, it’ll come across in the shoot, and so I try and use any nervous energy to empower me to achieve more. It sure feels better then getting ashamed and backing down.

When did your passion for fitness start?
A couple years ago, I got frustrated with myself for taking my body for granted. I’ve always been quite lean, the advantage a lot of naturally skinny guys have. I kept seeing friends of mine, particularly girls, who constantly were getting depressed and angry about not being fit and working hard at the gym, just to try and look good. I just thought to myself, if they’re working so hard to look good, what right do I have to sit around, look ok based on my lucky fast metabolism, and take the easy road? So I started training and working on my personal hygiene, maintenance, and appearance, and here I am.
A couple years ago, I got frustrated with myself for taking my body for granted. I’ve always been quite lean, the advantage a lot of naturally skinny guys have. So I started training and working on my personal hygiene, maintenance, and appearance, and here I am.
What keeps you determined and driven to keep a healthy life?
Of health and fitness, looks are definitely not the important thing. Being well, and feeling like you’ve had a good night sleep makes you ready to take on life; these are the best parts of a healthy lifestyle. Just having the energy and strength to do your job, whatever it is, makes you not only happier, but also more willing to be generous and share the good vibes around. It puts a smile on my face, every day, and so that definitely keeps me determined.
What is your diet like?
(More laughs) My diet was pretty bad admittedly, but has gotten a lot healthier over the last few months. I always thought that training was all you really needed, along with a high protein intake, but that isn’t true at all. I’ve been learning to cook a lot more, since I live away from home, and recently have really knuckled down on being a lot healthier. My main meals nowadays involve about 500g of meat, usually marinated chicken or steak, as the main component, white rice, fruit and vegetables, and various kinds of nuts. There’s also always at least a cup of coffee per day. The coffee isn’t essential, I’m just addicted to it.
If you had a cheat day, what would be your favourite food?
When I have a day off, or just need to loosen the belt and pig out, then my cheat food is definitely baked desserts. Apple pies, custard tarts, Danishes, doughnuts, you name it. Me in a bakery on a cheat day is like a dream come true.

Can you share your fitness regimen with us?
I train 5-6 days a week. It takes around an hour and half, with each session being dedicated to a key area, like legs, core, back, etc. I always try out new exercises that I read online, or in magazines, and generally end each session with a bit of relaxing in the steam-room. I love using free weights, as I believe having good stabilising muscles and a functional body is better than pure mass gains.

And what’s the best form of cardio for you?
Using a rowing machine. I used to row back in high school, and it’s just a really good all round body workout. I also don’t really enjoy cardio itself, so actually doing an exercise I enjoy really keeps me motivated to actually make time for cardio, not just lift weights every time I’m in the gym. Having a good balance is great ideally, but it’s difficult to do something you don’t enjoy and actually get any benefit from it.

Your favourite song or piece of music to play while training or running?
When I bust out the tunes at the gym, it’s pop-punk all the way. Mayday Parade, All Time Low, and even 5 Seconds of Summer are going to get some airtime on my playlist and make sweet love to my eardrums. The only problem is when I start to sing along and forget that I’m actually working out.
Do you have any other passions besides fitness?
I actually love to write lyrics and songs. I’ve never done much music, just some vocal lessons and played a few gigs with mates; it’s just something I love to do. Writing lyrics just relaxes me and helps me sort out my emotions and deal with any problems I have. I think everyone needs a passion that gets them through the good and the bad.

What can’t you live without?
Passion and creativity. I seriously can’t cope when I’m doing something and there’s just no flare or imagination to it. I actually need to add my personal touch to things, modify, edit, and change stuff around me to prove that some kind of effort was put in to the process. I think it’s why I love talking about anything with people; I don’t care what it is, but if they’re passionate about it, I’m all ears.
Could you finish these two sentences for us? You wouldn’t know, but I’m very good at …
… chess. I love strategy games and strategic thinking. It’s why my major was in Marketing and Entrepreneurship. It’s why I work in a hobby shop. I really enjoy having a good thinking game, especially over a glass of red wine. I find it all very relaxing while being intense at the same time. And even if the person I’m playing isn’t good, I find that the banter makes it well worth playing games, regardless of the outcome.
Now ... I’m just not very good at …
… driving. It’s not like I get involved in crashes or am careless on the road, I just don’t necessarily make my passengers feel totally safe in the car; or at least that’s what my mum tells me. Of all the people she could call, I’m the last one to be hit up for a driving favour. Unless it’s driving someone up the wall; that I’m actually pretty good at!
One last question Andrew, what is your big dream?
My big dream is really just to be someone that my friends and family can be proud of. I really look up to my parents, and to my friends and their achievements, and am proud when other people are great at what they do. I hope one day I’ve done enough to have kids that look up to, and are proud of, me too. Not a big dream, but definitely one that takes a lot of work.
